Spring has Sprung

It amazes me how different things can be in just a day or two or three. The day the kids got here Tiffany and I took these first pictures.

Here you can see  the Bradford pear tree with it’s leaves unfurling.Bradford Pear tree ~ Lifeofjoy.me

And here is a close up of the blossoms budding.Buds on Bradford Pear Tree ~ Lifeofjoy.meThe daffodils are budding. It’s odd because these are in full sun, very similar conditions to the ones across the street but those are open already.  :D Oh well, it doesn’t matter because these will bloom too. :)Daffodil Buds ~ Lifeofjoy.meHere are some blossoms on the free peach tree. By that I mean that we did not plant this and it wasn’t here when we moved out here either. We can only assume that it grew from some peach pit that we put out with the stuff for our first set of chickens and eventually grew from either being processed through the chicken or was never eaten and managed to grow unaided. It is quite sturdy and strong looking and has MANY blossoms on it. Budding Free Peach Tree ~ Lifeofjoy.me Peach Tree ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis is some of the blossoms on the peach tree we purchased from Walmart several years ago. You may remember that we had lots of blossoms on it one year (last year?) but then got several late freezes and we were unprepared to protect it. Consequently, I’m praying that the weather stays nice and we don’t get any of that mess this year because we are still unprepared and I’d really love to get some peaches.

However, a teacher at our church tells a story of a peach tree he remembers from his youth, that the first peaches from the tree were not very tasty. I hope these will be. Only time will tell. :)Budding little Peach tree ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis one is the plum tree we got from Walmart the same year as the peach tree. It is covered in little white blossoms. I really hope that means we will be getting a lot of yummy sweet plums this year. :) (I’m cautious with my expectations because of said peach story though.) Plum tree budding ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis is just two days later.Spring Bradford Pear Tree ~ Lifeofjoy.e Daffodils are blooming ~ Lifeofjoy.meAnd on day 3 you can see it’s in full bloom and so are my daffodils. It’s odd, they are ALL the light yellow with the long orange trumpets. I planted a variety mix and have had a few other varieties in the past but they are all like this now. I may go gather some from the ditch line across the street where my neighbor has not planted them (he’s been gone for a long time, so I cannot ask permission ;) ) and plant them amongst these. Those are all the bright yellow ones. I think it’d be pretty to have some of those interspersed with these.Full view of Bradford Pear Tree ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis is the purchased peach tree the two days later. Buds have blossomed. :) And there are more buds there.  Blossoming Tiny Peach Tree ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis is the plum tree the couple of days later. Looking good. Until next time, God bless,

Springtime: Flowers and Kits

It is springtime in Oklahoma! Of course it was quite cool the last few days and I am just fine with that. I feel like the longer we have cooler temperatures the less likely we are to have horrendously hot temperatures any time soon . . . at least I hope that is true. I can tolerate cold a lot better than 100º temps and higher.

At any rate we have some wild flowers in bloom.

Little Purple Wild Flowers ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis picture doesn’t really do them justice. They are really pretty and remind me of small irises.

Then there are these little white flowers everywhere.

White Wild Flowers ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt isn’t a very good picture either but . . . you get the idea. I love the spring because we have so many flowers around the yard . . . that is . . . until we start mowing . . .

First Mow 2018 ~ Lifeofjoy.meTiffany mowed some this week.

More First Mow 2018 ~ Lifeofjoy.meSome of my irises are bloomed! :)

Iris Bed ~ Lifeofjoy.meThey are multiplying nicely. I planted them here in the shade because my mom has a huge bed of them and they seem to thrive in the shade. :)

Iris Closeup ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt’s beautiful!!!

Iris 2018 ~ Lifeofjoy.meThere is some ivyish stuff growing in with my irises. I’m going to have to don some gloves and remove it at some point. ;)

The Sweet Williams Brian and Lauren bought me a few years ago for my birthday/Mother’s Day are blooming nicely! It is always so nice to see pretty flowers come up of their own accord.

Sweet Williams ~ Lifeofjoy.meWe planted some oregano near it last summer, basically so we wouldn’t lose it in the yard somewhere. Well. I didn’t think it would come back this year because it was kind of dead last fall. It did not take very well. But look at it now . . .

Oregano ~ Lifeofjoy.meI guess we’ll be drying some and bottling it up for the winter. We use a lot of oregano, so this is a good thing. We will probably try some basil again this year. :D

My sister and her hubby gave us this Calla Lilly for Easter this year. I’m hoping it will be fine once I plant it. It got too cold several times since we received it so I haven’t planted it yet but am hopeful that it will do fine afterwards. I hope it is a perennial but I haven’t checked. If it is, I will either plant it back by the irises or up with the daffodils/narcissus.

Michael is getting the chicken coop all cleaned up and ready for chickens again and for some pygmy goats. We plan to leash them to certain areas to let them help us clear out some sections.

He worked really hard all day the other day because it’s been a while since we’ve had chickens and thus the whole area was grown over.

Coop ~ Lifeofjoy.meYeah, it’s makeshift but it will do. ;) But it is nicely cleaned out now.

Inside Coop ~ Lifeofjoy.meInside Coop ~ Lifeofjoy.meWhen he got inside, he found that one of our cats had kittens in there. Jitters isn’t the brightest cat we own but she sure was smart to pick this place to have them. She had two in here. Michael moved them outside so he could clean it up a bit.

Lonely Kitten ~ Lifeofjoy.meHe put both of them in this crate with some tar paper. Jitters took one off back into the wooded area back towards our pond. I think she got confused and after dinner this one was still left alone. Thankfully we have two other cats that have recently had kittens.

KitKat only had one kit this time around. She’s a really good mom. Her kit is black as midnight so I named him/her Midnight. We brought the lonely kitten up front to the cat house and introduced it to KitKat, who took care of it right away. Midnight seemed kind of glad to have a litter mate after all. ;)

Kitkat and kits ~ lifeofjoy.meMidnight is 2-3 weeks old and the new kit is only days old. I think they will do fine. :)

Well, I’ve rambled on enough for one day. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I intend to. :)

Until next time, God bless,

Flowers, Liam, and Visiting

It is always so busy at restaurants on Mother’s Day, and we dislike crowds, so we grabbed a quick bite to eat at Whataburger on our way to my parents’ house that day. While we were there, I think there was a group there together from somewhere, although I have no idea where. At any rate, they passed out some pretty carnations to every mother in the place. It was really very sweet of them.
Mother's Day Carnation ~ Lifeofjoy.meMother's Day Carnation ~ Lifeofjoy.meI got some pretty annuals to put in the front circular flower bed.

Circular Flower Bed ~ Lifeofjoy.meSome geraniums, I think.

Flowers ~ Lifeofjoy.meFlowers ~ Lifeofjoy.meYep, I got that one in two different colors. That pink one is so vibrant and the orange was really nice too. I couldn’t decide between the two, so I bought both. :D

Vincas, which I love because they are drought tolerant and I actually managed not to kill them. I’ve got a lot of these because Michael bought me several different colors of them. :) Hmmm, it seems that I did not get a picture of these yet. I’ll have to remedy that and share next week. :)

Gerber Daisies

Flowers ~ Lifeofjoy.meThose look so nice they look fake. :D

This one is called Lemon Slice something. I don’t remember what the rest of it was but lemon slice was so perfect for these bright beauties. They may be petunias.

Flowers ~ Lifeofjoy.me

The purple flowered one in the middle is a perennial, so I’m looking forward to seeing if they survive. ;) Of course you cannot see the small purple flowers on it though.

Flowers ~ Lifeofjoy.meI tried to crop this in my wp but it didn’t seem to work and I don’t have time to keep messing with it. Hopefully it will do well, and I’ll put up another picture later. ;)

Then there are these.

My sister and her girls came over for a bit one day this week. Tiffany made us a mini chocolate cake. It was pretty good but the sweetener was a bit strong. Gotta work out the kinks. ;)

Mini Choc Cake ~ Lifeofjoy.meThen we got to babysit this cutie this week too!

Michael is so good with him.

Michael and Liam ~ Lifeofjoy.me

It happened to be the same night that my parents came for dinner. So it was a joy to have both here at the same time. :)

Mom and Liam ~ Lifeofjoy.meAfter being warned about the chair, Daddy seemed to be comfortable and enjoying conversation with Michael.

Lauren said he gets two pouches of food for dinner. He was definitely enjoying himself. :D

It has been a fun but busy week. The weekend is going to be full of baking because Tiffany’s birthday is this weekend and Mom’s is a week later, so we’ll be celebrating both this Sunday and I have three desserts to make before it is all over. (Wow, that was a Heidi worthy sentence! :D )

I hope you have a great weekend!

Until next time God bless,

Peach Tree, Flowers, and Liam

It appears that our peach tree and its blossoms made it through the frost that hit a couple of weekends ago. There are some new blossoms and the old ones seem to be progressing along. Of course, I’ve never seen the stages of how a peach is formed but it seems like it is moving as it should be.

Peach Tree, Flowers, and Liam ~ Lifeofjoy.mePeach Tree, Flowers, and Liam ~ Lifeofjoy.meOh! the peaches we’ll have! But now Michael tells me it is supposed to dip down below freezing again this weekend. Oh God! PLEASE protect my peaches, peach blossoms, and my peach tree overall.

The narcissus all bloomed out this week too. They are now standing tall and looking lovely.

Peach Tree, Flowers, and Liam ~ Lifeofjoy.meYes, I know, my flower bed is a disgrace. One day I’ll have beautiful flower beds but until then, I’ll just keep learning and growing. I think these may have actually increased from last year, like they’re supposed to do. :) Cool!

Peach Tree, Flowers, and Liam ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt looks like I have mostly the short trumpet ones. Oh well! At least they are the ones with the darker yellow centers. That’s some nice contrast.

Liam and new blocks ~ Lifeofjoy.meLook who was here last weekend! I bought him some sensory blocks and balls. I think he liked them.

Here is how we handled not having a highchair when we ate dinner. :)

Make-shift Highchair ~ Lifeofjoy.meI think he liked it.

He likes it! ~ Lifeofjoy.meHe moves his feet a lot . . . caught him mid-circle. :D

Changed into pj’s and chasing that rubber ducky.

Now on to the book.

Catching up on his reading ~ Lifeofjoy.meThen Aunt Tiffany read him Jesse Bear What Will You Wear.

Tiff and Liam & book ~ Lifeofjoy.meHe loves books! We’re all so happy about that. :)

Then Uncle Sean played with him. Here he was laughing at Grandpa. (He’s so unloved, right? NOT!)

Uncle Sean Time ~ Lifeofjoy.meThen Uncle Sean read him Jesse Bear What Will You Wear. Yep, the same book. :D We do have other books AND they are readily available. Oh well, he seemed to like it.

Uncle Sean's Turn ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt was a fun visit!

I got this really wonderful cookbook this week. I’m loving it. I made some bread from it this week and even though it didn’t turn out exactly right, it still tasted good. :)

I gave some sticky flags to Sean, Tiffany, and Michael to flag the things they would like me to make.

New cookbook fun ~ Lifeofjoy.meThere are very few unmarked recipes and some of those I want to try myself. :D They used up all of those flags I had. I guess I have lots of cooking to do over the next little while. Yum Yum!

Well, I hope you have a good and warm weekend.

Until next time, God bless,

Liam, Bradford Pear Trees, and Flowers

Wow! Another week has passed, March has arrived, and the weekend is quickly approaching. The only big plans I have for the weekend is time with my grandson. :) I didn’t see him last week and I hear he managed to crawl a few ‘steps’ since last I saw him.
Liam Crawls a Little ~ Lifeofjoy.meMy sweet daughter-in-love sends me pictures on occasion, unsolicited. :) It brings a smile to my face to see this cutie.

On the other hand, Michael will request pictures from Brian from time to time. Here are two that he got last week sometime. Of course, I have them now because I asked him not to hoard them. :D

My son with his son ~ Lifeofjoy.meNow that is adorable. :) <3

Liam in the Hood ~ Lifeofjoy.me

My peach blossoms survived the freeze we had last weekend. I was concerned about it but prayed and it seems fine. Thank you God!

The Bradford Pear tree was in full bloom this week. Tiffany was outside the other day and took some really good pictures of it.

I love how she captured the sun in this one.

Nice picture of the blossoms in the shade with sunlight kissing them.

Bradford Pear Tree Blossoms ~ Lifeofjoy.meThese bring me joy. :)

Bradford Pear Tree Blossoms ~ Lifeofjoy.me
Look how close these are to the trunk.

You could see the stamen pretty well in that last picture but look here.

Bradford Pear Tree Blossoms ~ Lifeofjoy.meI read an article this week blasting the Bradford Pear Trees and their relative the Cleveland Select. I’ve never seen that one but I like the Bradford Pear Trees. I don’t know what thorny ‘ornamental pears’ he’s talking about because I don’t have any in my yard.

I have a few wild bradford pear trees on our property. Unfortunately the old one up here in the front part of the property must’ve gotten hit by lightening recently because its top if broken off–or it might’ve happened during that bad storm that came through last July. Sadly, we’ll have to chop it down now. But I love these trees because they signal that spring is here (or at least on the way, some years).

I like the Redbud trees for the same reason. We have several tiny wild ones on the property too. I’ve tied strings on them, so I know which ones they are when we clear paths and such. I don’t like to chop those down. I will request those be relocated if they are in the way. They haven’t bloomed when last I checked but with the Bradfords in full bloom, they’re surely not far behind.

Look what else popped up.

Narcissus ~ Lifeofjoy.meRecognize it?

Narcissus ~ Lifeofjoy.meNarcissus ~ Lifeofjoy.meA lovely spring flower. :) I like the bright yellow trumpets but really prefer the full yellow flowers. I’m not sure which are daffodils and which are jonquils but I prefer the yellower ones, which I don’t have any of any more. Don’t know what happened to them but these are all I have left.

I did notice that my irises are starting to grow their stems now too. They are in the back in a shadier spot. The narcissus are up front in full sun.

Well, I’ve rambled enough for one day. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Until next time, God bless,

November

I am not a fan of eighty degree temperatures unless I’m going swimming.  I am most definitely NOT a fan of eighty degree temperatures in November! I don’t like wearing shorts on Thanksgiving but I have at some point in the day, more times than not, in the years we’ve lived in Oklahoma.

Even my plants are confused. My rose bush has a couple of flowers and my Vincas, which I absolutely love for their heat and drought tolerance, are still blooming, even amongst the weeds.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.meNovember ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt is natural for the mums to be blooming though. I have some white ones, which sometimes turn a little bit purple, and some brown ones, which sometimes turn a bit of a dull yellow in the center of each flower.

Mike’s been waiting to paint the house until the temperatures cooled off a bit and wasn’t raining, which isn’t always an easy combination here in Northeastern Oklahoma. ;) But thankfully he’s gotten most of it painted and even sampled the “Sundried Tomato” color on the trim. I’m loving it. Unfortunately, the sun was starting to go down when he was finishing up yesterday and so the lighting isn’t that good in this picture, but it will give you an idea.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.me img_4015

Last Friday’s Holiday Blast was a lot of fun. I made sure we got the camera to the church and then asked Tiffany to take some pictures. Thankfully she did. They don’t do the decorations justice but you’ll get an idea of what it was like. We had about 110 in attendance – Great Turn-Out! We started with dinner and fellowship.

We didn’t get a picture of the food. We made nearly sixty pounds of turkey (three large turkeys) and about twenty pounds of ham (two large hams), green beans, mashed potatoes, and gravy. At the last minute we had another offer to bring rolls and butter, so that was added to our feast as well.

Tiffany, Gwin, and I made all the food. It was fun! We had a few hiccups, like when the mixer just wouldn’t mash those potatoes, but we got it all done.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.meNovember ~ Lifeofjoy.meNovember ~ Lifeofjoy.meNovember ~ Lifeofjoy.meNovember ~ Lifeofjoy.me

I was up and down all evening. :) We had door prizes, played some games, and had some singing.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.meI had the kids come up and share what they were thankful for during our Thanksgiving portion of the evening.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.meSean sang.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.meMary sang “Mary Did You Know” during our Christmas section.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.meDuring our Christmas section, we had dessert (apple, pumpkin, or pecan pies), played holiday bingo and winners got prizes. I should have stopped the game sooner because I ran out of prizes but they seemed ot have fun with it. I then had the children come up and sing a Christmas carol. I tried to get them to sing Away in a Manger or Silent Night but only one child knew those. 😯  So, I settled on Jingle Bells.

Next we celebrated New Year’s Eve. At my parents’ home, we play games on New Year’s Eve (and eat food). Two of the games we play are Taboo and Win, Lose, or Draw so I took the cards and put some in envelopes on each table so that everyone could play a little. When we play, we don’t use the boards that come with the game because there are about a dozen of us. We just use the cards and all holler out possible answers to the word or phrase on the cards. With Taboo, you can speak but cannot use the five words listed in your description of the word at the top of the card. For Win, Lose, or Draw, I let each person decide if they wanted to act it out like charades, or draw it on paper provided on the tables.

November ~ Lifeofjoy.me

I sang “His Name Will Live Forever” and then we poured the sparkling grape juice in the plastic champagne glasses and everyone got out their horns, as we played a video of the Times Square ball dropping and counted down the last ten seconds. We then all blew our horns, said “Cheers,” and drank our juice. :)

It was a fun evening. My feet were back to normal size by Sunday morning, so not too bad at all. I had some great help decorating and getting the tables set up. We used the place settings as part of the table “decoration” thus less was needed. We had the papers and pens needed to play the games, on the tables as well. We also had the horns and some candy on them. I did have to tell the children not to blow the horns, early in the evening though. And finally, Kim and Sharon put the decorations on them. There were ornaments on the green tables and pumpkins on the orange ones. They did a good job sprucing things up.

We’d celebrated the holidays together and then everyone pitched in to help us get the sanctuary back in order. It was a tremendous help having everyone join in the clean-up efforts. Several ladies helped out in the kitchen, getting it whipped back into shape as well and we gave away what little leftovers were there.

Well, I’ve rambled a bit long today, so I’ll go for now. Have a great weekend. It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is next week!

Until next time, God bless,

Michele ºÜº
