Cultivating a Servant’s Heart

(Yep, I know it is a corny picture to go with this but I was stumped. BTW, those are helping hands.)
(Yep, I know it is a corny picture to go with this but I was stumped. BTW, those are helping hands.)

Years ago, before any of my children were even teenagers, I was involved in the children’s ministry at the church we attended and we went to a children’s conference. At this conference there was a family helping . . . the mother and her children of various ages from about 4 years to about 15 years, which she homeschooled. I remember what an impact they made on me and how I wanted that to be may family in the future.

A bit later, we were attended a different church. It was a very small country church. My children began helping out in the sound booth with the power point presentations for the songs during song service. Then they began to be interested in music/learning to play the guitar. One of the men in the church loaned them on to learn on and they were allowed to play during worship services on stage with the band. (Yes, a very small church.)

During the summer that year they had a type of conference where attendees would be on campus 24 hours a day for two weeks. They would have classes during the day and services in the evenings and be served three meals a day, with snacks after the evening service. They asked for help and so, I volunteered us. The boys would help in the sound booth and then help wherever else they were needed. Tiffany and I would primarily help out in the kitchen, although I did help out in the office beforehand and a small bit on different days as well.

We attended this church for four years and helped every time they had one of these conferences. There were sometimes week long conferences in March and one in October as well. It was during our stay at this church that the children learned to talk to people of all ages. There weren’t any kids their own age there, for the most part, so they learned to communicate well with all ages (except their own). They related well to the doctors, lawyers, ministers, as well as workmen, and anyone else, no matter what their profession.

I would have to say that this time period was the foundation for what they are and do today. Today, any time there is a need for a volunteer, they are eager and quick to lend a hand. They all give freely of the time and labor. They are comfortable being told what to do and going and getting it done, as well as seeing other things that need to be done and taking the initiative and handling it as well (as long as they know it is in an area they have the authority to do so).

One big part of cultivating a servant’s heart in your children is to have one yourself. You cannot expect your children to do something they do not see you do. I volunteered right alongside my children, each in the area were were qualified to help in. I was not thrilled with helping out in the kitchen in the beginning; I preferred helping in the office but through my willingness to do what needed to be done, I now LOVE working in the kitchen as a volunteer and do so whenever needed at our current church.

As important as it is to find outside areas to volunteer, it is just as important to allow children the opportunity to serve at home as well. Learning to do their part in the home without squabbling is a good place to continue their training.

Amaze Tree and Steps

iamthedivacztThis weeks’ Diva Challenge is a guest post by Dilip Patel from India. He challenges us to us a tree shape as our string and use a single tangle on it.

The Square One: Purely Zentangle focus is Helen Williams’ tangle Steps. I thought I might use it for my monotange but I hadn’t tried my hand at Steps yet and since I didn’t want to mess up my challenge tile, I decided to use a different tangle for the challenge tile.

I considered which tangle could look like leaves and bark. I didn’t go through very many options in my head before I considered Amaze or Stiritup. I decided it was a good match, besides amaze is a very easy tangle to draw.

Here is what I came up with.

I then decided to try my hand at steps. Here is my first attempt.

Steps ~ Lifeofjoy.me

It is not shaded and I know that adds tons to a tangle but I do not like this. I think it is about my base line. So I attempted it again on an ATC size tile.

Another Steps ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt is better, still not shaded but still better. I like this a bit better than the first attempt but that isn’t saying much. I guess I’m going to have to look at what others have done with it to figure out how I should draw the base line.

Thank you!!!

I really appreciate the committed commenters! I seldom have the opportunity to check out other’s submissions to the challenge, so when I am so far down the list of contributors, number 51 this last week, I am thrilled that there are people that persevered and even took the time to comment too!

Thank you Ulrike, Maggiebee, AnneMarie, and Jean. I really appreciate your encouragement. And Jean, thanks for pointing out that what I did around purk and hollibaugh was to add the aura enhancement.

Also, thanks to the two that clicked the like heart as well.

Until next time, God bless,

Crunchwraps

Beans first ~ Lifeofjoy.meWell, I did it again. I cannot believe it. I had intended to share the recipe for pumpkin bars today but once again, I forgot to take pictures as I was making it. I could make it again but we still have a lot of sweets around here and do not need any more. So, I have to try again when I make it for Christmas. ;)

Last night we had crunchwraps for dinner. I had never had one of these before finding the directions online. I have changed it considerably from what I found online, so I share it here with you today.

There are a few things you need to prepare in order to assemble this filling entree. Brown and season 1# of ground meat. Shred the cheese, open a can of refried beans, fry the corn tortillas, and heat up the burrito shells to make them pliable. Finally, spray a large cookie sheet with oil.

Assembly is rather easy:

Spread a bit of the refried beans in the middle of the burrito shell, in a circle about the size of the fried corn tortilla (or purchased tostada shell).

Now fold up the burrito over the edges of the tostada.

Continue all the way around and then turn placing the folds on the greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 450º until slightly golden, about 5-10 minutes, and flip and bake until the other side is slightly golden is as well, about another 5-10 minutes.

I serve these with sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, and either green onion or regular diced onion.

I hope you enjoy these. They are really quite filling. I tried serving them with rice once and it was just too much.

Oh! With the amounts of items given I make 4 crunchwraps.

Until next time, God bless,
