Knightstar

iamthedivacztThis week’s Diva Challenge is a UMT (Use My Tangle) challenge. This time around is Daniel Lamothe’s Knightstar. It reminded me of a variation of Knightsbridge that Margaret Bremner shared on her blog when she was playing with it, called Knightspeek by Donna Lacey. Daniel’s version differs slightly from Donna’s by rotating the tile differently and having a uniform underlying grid. If you haven’t seen Margaret’s Knightsbridge page, do go check it out. It is definitely worth the time.

I wanted one big star in the middle of my tile but unfortunately it didn’t happen on my first attempt, even after I gave it some thought. Oh well, there are no mistakes with Zentangle, so I finished it off with some shading. Oops, just realized, I forgot to take a before shading picture, which would have been great because there are some massive differences in the before and after. Bummer!

Knightstar ~ Lifeofjoy.meThis version turned out more like fan blades or a flower.

So I tried again and achieved the results I was looking for.

Knightstar ~ Lifeofjoy.meSince this second tile is what I had planned to do, I shaded it first. The shading looks a bit bolder in person. I sure wish I’d have taken a before shaded picture, especially of the first version. I did all my shading with the same regular old pencil. I may need to pull out one of my softer leaded pencils for even more depth in the future.

I had planned to do two tiles today, one with the one big star and then something different, which I hadn’t thought of yet. But when the first tile didn’t turn out the way I wanted, although I did like the end result, I didn’t have enough time to do a third tile. So this is it for today. ;)

Thanks in advance for any comments you lovely tanglers make. You are a big encouragement to me.

Until next time, God bless,

Banana Pudding

Homemade pudding NOT from a box, Nilla Wafers, and bananas. Not as difficult as it may seem and the results are delicious.

The banana pudding I grew up eating has layers of crushed graham crackers, bananas, whipped topping (Cool Whip), and vanilla pudding, preferably the cook and server rather than the instant kind. I really like this because it is a very light dessert. I especially like it at Thanksgiving and Christmas when I prefer to eat more of the main meal instead of the dessert buffet we provide. ;)

This banana pudding is massively different than that one. This one uses Nilla Wafers instead of crushed graham crackers. This one has no whipped topping. This one makes the pudding from scratch. And this one can be eaten warm but is also very good cold.

I would not prefer to eat it after having eaten a big meal though because the amount of Nilla Wafers in it changes its consistency from mostly pudding, making it denser but still very yummy.

I made this over the weekend and was too full to eat it right away. The rest of the family though, really enjoyed it. Mike ate his warm but Tiffany and Sean opted to put theirs in the freezer to chill it rapidly. Then they proclaimed it delicious! :)

Begin by layering Nilla Wafers in the bottom of a medium bowl. I use a two quart pyrex dish but it is rather full. Oh, I turn the cookies upside down because of the curve of the bowl and the curve on the top of the cookies. Then add a layer of bananas.

Banana Pudding ~ Lifeofjoy.meRepeat layers with remaining cookies and bananas, ending with cookies on top. Notice that I turned the top layer of cookies right side up. :)

Banana Pudding ~ Lifeofjoy.meNow we move to the double boiler. If you don’t have one, you can use a bowl over a pot but I recommend getting one. They don’t have to be expensive to work.

Put the sugar, flour, egg yolks, and salt into the top pan/bowl. Then add the milk and begin whisking.

Banana Pudding ~ Lifeofjoy.me(That picture was taken before adding the milk.)

Banana Pudding ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt takes about 15 minutes of constant whisking to get this thick. (You don’t have to give your arm a workout, just keep it moving so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.)

Vital Step: Once it is thick, remove from heat and add the vanilla!!! (I forgot to add the vanilla until after I’d poured it over the cookies and pudding and it did not taste good! I dripped the vanilla over the pudding, since most of it was still on top and swirled it around the best I could. Thus the picture doesn’t look very good but the pudding tasted great.)

Then pour the pudding over the cookies and bananas.

Banana Pudding ~ Lifeofjoy.meBanana Pudding ~ Lifeofjoy.meI like to run a rubber spatula down the sides of the bowl to help the pudding get all the way to the bottom. And then I wiggle it in the middle a few places too. (I wonder if I make my pudding get too thick? Hmm, something to ponder.)

Can be served immediately, warm or wait until it has chilled and moistened all those Nilla Wafers. The choice is yours.

Okay, I just dug up where I originally found this yummy recipe and apparently, I do let my pudding get too thick. I’ll try to remember that for next time but in the meanwhile, it’s still yummy!!!

Until next time, God bless,

Walls Meant to Divide

Walls Meant to Divide ~ Lifeofjoy.meIt is important that we understand the devil’s devices. He hates family and marriage. He works hard to cause dissension between spouses and family members. I believe he wants to destroy the family unit.

One of the biggest devices he uses is to breakdown communication. Mike and I had one of these moments over the weekend. We had our monthly date night; yes I know, many people have a weekly date night but we are ‘hermits’ that live thirty minutes from town, so we’re doing good if we manage a monthly date night. :)

At any rate, while we were at lunch, we were talking. I mentioned that the change was my money. I merely meant that I had added extra money from my allowance. Unfortunately this caused a bit of a wrinkle in our time out together. Fortunately we were able to overcome it and  the rest of our outing was not hindered.

On our trip home I broached the subject to try and keep the misunderstanding from happening again. I explained what I meant and he understood. We came to an understanding. I will be careful to use the term ‘my allowance’ instead of ‘my money.’ :)

See, it is something that can easily be rectified, so as not to cause further miscommunications. But the devil doesn’t want that. He wants things to get out of control and cause hurt feelings and offenses in such a manner that there is a wedge in the marriage. He wants us to build walls between us. It is our responsibility to tear down those walls and keep our communication open and pure.

This is just one example. There are so many more ways that walls get built up between husband and wife by little everyday happenings. I challenge you to examine your situation and see what little wall you can tear down or build a bridge over. ;) God is there to help you. Ask Him what area you can work on and then do so. With His help, it can be easy.

Until next time, God bless,
